DRUG MANUFACTURING
The Drug Manufacturing Unit started as a Compounding and Research Unit under the Department of Pharmaceutical Services in 1999 and later upgraded to a small scale Drug Manufacturing Unit in 2003 and by 2006 was removed from under pharmacy department and placed directly under the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee. The Unit was established for producing and assessing the efficacy of drugs as provided in the hospital manual.
Unit Functions
The Unit was established for producing and assessing the efficacy of drugs. It provides the following services:
1. Extemporaneous Preparations = Preparing medicines by hand on a small scale tailored to specific need of an individual patient.
2. Chemicals and related products – Preparation of chemicals like methylated spirit, Eusol, Hydrogen Peroxide and also filtered and distilled water for supply to Hospitals.
3. Manufacturing – Manufacturing of NAFDAC registered drugs like, AMIDOL Syrup (Paracetamol) and AMIKAQUINE syrup (Chloroquine).
4. Quality Control – Analysis of pharmaceuticals to ascertain quality.
5. Research and Information Dissemination – Carrying out research on various aspects of pharmacy practices, especially those related to formulation and compounding. Also information dissemination on topical issues regarding pharmacy.
6. Training – Training of Pharmacist and Students – Intern Pharmacist, Chemist, Microbiologist, Biochemist, Industrial Chemists from various institutions and also receiving visitors on educational visits.
