MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY

Functions
The Department executes the following functions:-
1. Microbiological analysis of clinical specimens routinely and at emergency.
2. Training of Resident Doctors in Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology
3. Supervision of I.T. Students from various Institutions of Higher Learning in Nigeria.
4. Running clinics at the Specialty Clinics, STD and RVD.
5. Training of Medical students at 200, 300 and 400 levels at BUK/AKTH respectively.
6. Research and Publication of research findings
7. Seminars/Workshops and Clinical meetings of the hospital
8. Infection Control in the Hospita Environs
9. Training of Intern Medical Lab. Scientists for 1 year
10. As part of the Regional centre of excellence in PEPFAR, Avian Flu and TB monitoring and test.

Inter-Departmental Activities
* The Department is involved in running RVD clinics
* The Department participates in weekly mortality meeting in Medicine Department.
* The Infectious Control Unit of the Department is fully involved in infections control of the Hospital.
* Guidelines for GIT infection has benefited from the Departments input.
* Running of the STD clinic
* Participates in the three (3) monthly Histopathology satellite seminar
