ANESTHESIOLOGY AND INTENSIVE CARE

Department Functions

The department of anaesthesiology and intensive care is tasked primarily with training and service. It is also involved in formal teaching of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students, as well as conducting research in relevant areas.

Visual services are rendered to various departments and units in the hospital, such services include anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgical procedures for General Surgical, Paediatric, Urology, ENT Surgical, Maxillofacial, Ophthalmic, critically ill patients in the intensive care units.

The department is also involved in procurement of medical gases and distribution of same for oxygen therapy in the wards.

Staff Position

The department is manned by medical and non-medical staff of different cadres made up of physician Anaesthetists, Resident Doctors, Nurse Anesthesiotist and Critical care Nurses. Other supporting staff includes secretary, Messenger/Cleaner and Health Attendants.

Performance and achievement
The department was able to render anaesthetic services to various surgical specialties for elective and emergency surgery as well as specialist care for patients admitted in the intensive care Unit.


Research & Publications
Staffs of the department are presently undertaking a number of researches for publication in reputable medical journals. Some of these researches/studies include:-

• “Safe and cost implication of acute Normovolaemic Haemodilution for elective mandibuletomy in kano”
• The changing trend in Obstetric Anaesthesia in AKTH – retropective study.
• Transfusion requirement for operative delivery in AKTH.
